Death of François Duret-Robert, specialist in market law

François Duret-Robert, an eminent jurist specializing in market law, died on Sunday October 13 at the age of 92. Very well known and recognized in the art market, he has had a long career as a journalist, author and teacher. A graduate of the Institute of Political Studies (1958), he began his career in the legal and tax department of Éditions Lamy from 1958 to 1962. He then joined the editorial staff of Knowledge of the Artswhere he held the position of deputy editor in chief in charge of the “Sales Courses” section from 1963 to 1996. He subsequently collaborated on Figaro (1997-2002), au Monde (2002-2003) and The Art Object (2002-2020) as an art market specialist.

Alongside his journalistic career, he was a teacher and lecturer at the École du Louvre (1991-2006), at the Paris-Dauphine University (1994-2011), at the Jean-Moulin 3 University (2002- 2011), at the National Heritage Institute (2006-2015) and at the Panthéon-Sorbonne University (2007-2015) in Masters specialized in law and the art market.

François Duret-Robert has also published important works concerning the art market. He wrote the first reference publication in this field: Art market lawpublished in 2002. This pioneering and exhaustive work deals with the regulation of public auctions and gallery sales.

François Duret-Robert is the author of numerous other works: The 400 blows of the ivory hammer (1964), Art dealers and gold miners (1991), Maurice Rheims: interviews with François Duret-Robert (1993), What future for the art market? (1996). A tribute was paid to him by the Art & Law Institute in 2021 in the form of a work co-written by around forty personalities from the sector.
