Arsenal coach resigns after poor results

Jonas Eidevall, the Swedish coach of the Gunners, decided to leave his position this Tuesday.

The Swede Jonas Eidevall “resigned” from his position as Arsenal women’s coach, which he leaves “with immediate effect”announced Tuesday the English club, which is off to a bad start in the championship and the Champions League.

The Londoners have won only one of their first four Women’s Super League (WSL) matches, against poorly ranked Leicester City (1-0). On Saturday, they lost 2-1 at the Emirates against Chelsea, who scored two goals in the first sixteen minutes of the match. In the Champions League, they suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat at Bayern Munich on October 9 at the opening of the group stage. The second match is scheduled for Wednesday at home against the Norwegian Valerenga.

“We can confirm that Jonas Eidevall has resigned as head coach of the women’s first team and is leaving us with immediate effect”said Arsenal, third in the last championship and currently in sixth place after four matches.

The Swede arrived in north London in June 2021 after coaching Rosengard, a club from Malmö. With the “Gunners”, he won two English League Cup titles and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2023. However, he did not play in the European Cup last season, eliminated in the first qualifying round by FC.

Dutchwoman Renée Slegers, Arsenal assistant coach, will act as interim coach pending the appointment of Eidevall’s successor, the club said.
