185 deaths per year during sporting activities – men more affected

Every year, 185 people lose their lives during sporting activities, the new BPA report indicates on Tuesday. Most fatal accidents occur in mountain sports, followed by winter and aquatic sports.

In total, more than 4,400 people have lost their lives during sporting activities in the last 24 years, specifies the Accident Prevention Bureau (BPA). Of 185 on average per year, the figures however vary greatly from year to year.

The weather plays a determining role, with almost all fatal accidents occurring outdoors. In good weather, there are more athletes outside and the number of accidents is higher.

With 84 deaths per year on average, mountain sports cause the highest number of deaths. In snow sports (38) and water sports (31), several dozen people lose their lives each year.

However, this does not mean that the risk of death is particularly high in these sports, the BPA qualifies. These disciplines are very popular in Switzerland and are practiced regularly by many people.

Victims overwhelmingly male

In addition to the frequency and duration of practicing a sporting discipline, the behavior of athletes has a great influence on the risk of an accident. In all areas, apart from equestrian sports, the vast majority of deaths are male (82%).

On the one hand, men practice certain types of activities more frequently than women. On the other hand, they are generally more inclined to overestimate their abilities.

Possible to reduce risk

However, it is possible to reduce the risk of serious or fatal accidents, assures the PBA. This is done by practicing a sport according to one’s physical and technical abilities, by equipping oneself correctly, by taking breaks, slowing down or stopping when in doubt.

Accident statistics show there is a need for action in many sports. The bpa.ch website offers advice on reducing the risk of accidents in more than 70 disciplines.
