US presidential election
A funny meeting that turned into a dance floor. While holding a “Town Hall meeting” in Oaks, Pennsylvania, this Monday, October 14, Donald Trump suddenly decided to interrupt questions from the public and asked to play music. He then danced, swaying his body to the rhythm of the playing songs. The candidate (new window) Republican continued for almost three quarters of an hour, relaunching debates around his mental health, as reported by the Washington Post (new window).
Two discomforts from his fans and a sudden change of program
The public meeting initially proceeded fairly normally. Participants asked questions of the candidate, particularly on the theme of housing and support for small businesses. The meeting was interrupted for the first time when a member of the public fainted, forcing emergency services to intervene. The music “Ave Maria” then resonated in the room. After the evacuation of the spectator, the Republican candidate tried to resume questions, before a second “medical emergency”.
From then on, Donald Trump decided to shake up the meeting program. The Republican candidate then asked to play his favorite music “Ave Maria”, while a graphic touting his measures against immigration (new window) illegal is posted on the wall. It ensures: “I sleep with it every night. I kiss it.”
For the next 39 minutes, the songs play, louder and louder, and Donald Trump dances, frozen on stage. Clapping his hands to the sound of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and “An American Trilogy” by Elvis Presley, he continues to criticize the Democratic camp: “They are evil.” Visibly surprised, some participants begin to rush towards the exit, loudly recalled by Donald Trump. He himself ends up leaving the stage.
This end-of-campaign episode (new window) raises new questions about his mental health. At the age of 78, many observers across the Atlantic are wondering about his ability to lead the country again, if he is elected in the elections on November 5. His opponent, Kamala Harris, had already called him a little earlier in the day a nobody “unstable” et “unbalanced”while she was also in Pennsylvania, one of the key states to win the election.
If the Trump camp, through its spokesperson Steven Cheung, described this event as “a festival of love” where people were “so excited they passed out”the Democratic candidate reacted to this strange sequence by writing about X: “I hope he’s okay.”
