Middle-earth still holds many mysteries ready to be revealed on the big screen to fans around the world by the end of 2024. After season 2 of Rings of Power on Amazon, it’s the turn of cinemas to welcome a work adapted from The Lord of the Rings. Besides, who is the character of Hera Hammerhand, the heroine of this animated film taking place before Peter Jackson’s trilogy?

A new Lord of the Rings film for 2024

2024 is definitely the year of The Lord of the Rings. Amazon Studios has enriched the universe imagined in the 20th century by JRR Tolkien with a season 2 of Rings of Power rich in revelations and twists, and New Line Cinema associated with Warner Bros. Animation intends to take up the torch by the end of the year with an animated film. The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim is a Japanese-American feature film based on the writings of the British author and directed by Kenji Kamiyamaa Japanese artist who previously worked on Akira, Jin-Roh The Wolf Brigade and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Animated entirely in 2D in the era of productions mixing 2D and 3D (often to reduce costs), The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim begins just under two centuries (183 to be exact) before the events of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This animated film takes a close look at the legendary King of Rohan Helm Hammerhand and the war between his kingdom and an army of Dunlendings, the descendants of Mortal Men who fought Morgoth alongside the elves during the War of the Great Wrath in the First Age. King Hammerhand is not the only headliner of this new chronicle of Middle-earth, his daughter Hera Hammerhand also plays a central role.

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim is released on December 11, 2024 in France in cinemas.

The worthy heir to a legend of Rohan

Hera Hammerhand is the daughter of Helm Hammerhand, the mythical king of Rohan who will give his name to the famous Helm’s Deepan iconic location in the Lord of the Rings trilogy where the battle between the Mortal Men and Saruman’s Uruk-hai legions takes place. Although it is not named that way in JRR Tolkien’s writings, it is indeed mentioned by the latter. It is therefore not a question of a creation, but of a necessary enrichment of the lore in order to recount some of the most significant events of the Third Age.

Played by the actress Gaia Wise who lends her voice to the character, the heiress of the Rohirrim is asked to marry by the lord of the Dunlendings Freca for his son Wulf who turns out to be a childhood friend of Hera. Following heated exchanges, Helm Hammerhand kills his vassal, leading to war between Rohan and the Dunlendings. Hera Hammerhand is not Helm’s only heir. She has two brothers Haleth and Hama who died respectively in the year 2758 and 2759 of the Third Age, during the war just like their father. Note that Hera Hammerhand makes an appearance in the video game The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of War (2017).
