A study that makes you think…and see!

Today we are going to talk about an IFOP study dedicated to the prevention of blindness.

In this matter, prevention is better than cure because apart from the few miracles, attested or not, blindness cannot yet be cured! UNADEV, the National Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired, carried out a survey which showed that seven out of ten French people do not know how to prevent visual impairment.

And yet, there are simple actions to adopt to prevent blindness?

Yes ! And we must remind them and remind them again! Just because I’m happy being blind doesn’t mean I’m recruiting followers!

So let’s go there again, starting with something really simple: sunglasses aren’t just for looking pretty! They should be worn rigorously because the rays damage the eyes in the long run! But in all things excess is a vice: so don’t stay cloistered at home. On the contrary, sight needs outside air! And then, it is essential to regularly moisturize your eyes to protect yourself from dust and other benign microbes that damage this fragile and seemingly essential organ! Well, that’s what many say, I do very well without it!

On the risk side, we hear a lot of things on the screens. Are they so dangerous for our eyes?

It has become impossible to do without it of course, but, yes, we must limit daily screen time, especially for children whose organs continue to evolve with their growth! So, ideally, we turn them off an hour before bedtime.

And if not, are there any foods to choose to maintain good eyesight?

Yes ! We can never eat enough foods rich in Omega3 and vitamin A! For example, chia seeds, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, avocado.

This is all good. But try to make an appointment with the ophthalmologist, the waiting times are enormous!

All the more reason to do it well in advance. From the age of 50 an annual visit is recommended. 19% of the population almost never goes to the eye doctor and this is worrying. It is regrettable that telemedicine is not more accessible! This is obviously the future in rural areas.

In the meantime, what can we say about blinding diseases?

They cause partial or total loss of vision and occur with aging. They affect around 12% of the population. They are one of the leading causes of blindness in relative indifference!

If cataracts are relatively well identified, the same is not true for glaucoma and AMD, which are not fatal.

And with all your advice, I will avoid blindness?

Not necessarily! But by taking care of your eyesight, you will receive all the help you need so that it lasts a long time and you can enjoy it as long as possible! But never forget! Losing your sight is not losing your life!

Have a nice week everyone!
