Paulo Duarte: “Togo’s big difficulty is winning at home and that’s due to…”

Bitter defeat for Togo at home this Monday, October 14, 2024, 4 months after the departure of Paulo Duarte. The Éperviers lost to the Fennecs of Algeria with a score of 1 goal to 0.

Even though Togo could not win the game, its performance in Kégué gave hope to the supporters. Some had lost faith in the Éperviers, especially after the humiliation in the first leg against Algeria last Thursday (5-1).

Before the double confrontation between Algeria and Togo, the Algerian media DZfoot.com interviewed the former coach of the Togolese selection, Paulo Duarte.

He admitted that the Sparrowhawks have a lot of difficulty winning at home, especially before his arrival at the head of the selection.

What is this due to? To a “psychological problem”estimated the technician who joined Saudi Arabia last June.

Duarte: “Togo does not win at home, it is crushed by negativity”

« Togo’s big difficulty is winning at home.”underlined Duarte. “When I arrived, it had been more than four years since they had won at home in the CAN qualifiers.

Together we played eight games at home, we had six draws, one defeat against Namibia and only one victory (against Cape Verde, in September 2023).

Namibia was my first home match. We could have won 7 or 8-1, but we lost, with an offside goal from one meter…

The problem is psychological. Togo at home does not win, it is crushed by negativity”he explained.

Togo currently occupies 3rd place in its group. After two draws and the double defeat against Algeria, he has 2 points. The Éperviers will have to win their next two matches to qualify for CAN 2025.
