Liège Assizes: guilty of murder required against Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden

The acts alleged against the accused took place on Saturday July 22, 2017 shortly after 11:00 p.m. in Wanze. Eric Wilkin, a 43-year-old resident of Saint-Georges, was hit by the car driven by Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden after a chase. The victim had a limb torn off and died from his injuries.

Very excited

The Advocate General recalled the context of the facts and Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden’s jealousy towards Valentin T., whom he considered as a romantic rival. The prosecution recalled that it was accompanied by five people from his family that Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden went to Wanze square with the aim of meeting Valentin T. When they arrived, they were all very excited, while Valentin T . was terrified by their behavior. The messages exchanged show that they were all satisfied with the terror and humiliation caused.

Eric Wilkin, a customer of the café in which Valentin T. had taken refuge, tried to intervene calmly to calm the ardor of the attackers. But their hostility did not diminish, because they took responsibility for what they were about to do to Valentin T.

According to the public prosecutor, it was in the same state of excitement and with the same motivation to settle scores that the members of Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden’s family chased Eric Wilkin’s van, in which Valentin T was located. Their desire was to wedge the van between their two vehicles. The stopping of the van at the entrance to a small street on the left can be explained in this way. According to the attorney general, the explanation according to which the members of Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden’s family gave up their manhunt does not hold up.

Voluntary shock

“Peaceful Eric Wilkin had been trying to calm things down since the beginning of the evening. What made him stop his vehicle and come out with a knife? The only rational explanation is the behavior of the others Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden had gotten out of his vehicle to attack Valentin T. Eric Wilkin found himself isolated, blocked and surrounded by several hostile men.argued the accusation.

Eric Wilkin thought he had scared his attackers away when Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden left the scene at the wheel of his car. But Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden turned around to hit him. The attorney general relies on automobile expertise to demonstrate that the collision was intentional and intended to mow down Eric Wilkin from behind. “It’s murder!”launched Ms. Bernard.

The attorney general explains that it is for psychological protection that Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden mentions an accident, because no one wants to admit that he has committed a murder. “It’s difficult to admit it to yourself and to see yourself that way in the eyes of the people you love. It’s an extremely difficult act to take on.”added Ms. Bernard.

The public prosecutor also claims the guilt of Gaëtan Vanwyngaerden for malicious obstruction of traffic and for threats by gestures.
