Davide Rebellin dies – German truck driver who hit Rebellin sentenced to four years in prison

On November 30, 2022, Rebellin, who had just ended his career, was hit by a truck while riding his bicycle near a roundabout in Montebello Vicentino, northern Italy. The truck driver then continued on his way, without helping the cyclist, who died on the spot. Identified thanks to surveillance cameras installed near the scene of the accident, the driver was arrested a few months later, in June 2023, in Germany.

The truck driver was prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist a person in danger. He was sentenced at first instance by the Vicenza court to four years in prison. The prosecution demanded five years.

According to the daily ‘Il Giornale di Vicenza’, the man is currently hospitalized in Germany after suffering a stroke.

Rebellin notably won Liège-Bastogne-Liège (2004), the Flèche wallonne (2004, 2007 and 2009), the Clasica San Sebastian (1997), the Zurich Championship (1997) and the Amstel Gold Race (2004) in his career. His career came to a halt in 2008 when he tested positive for EPO CERA during the Beijing Olympic Games, where he took second place, behind the Spaniard Samuel Sanchez. Sentenced to two years of suspension, he had to return his silver medal.
