Former Stasi member convicted of murder

It is a trial with a historical dimension, a former Stasi agent was convicted of the murder of Czeslaw Kukuczka, a Polish fugitive who wanted to cross to the West.

Sentenced 50 years after the fact

It was a seemingly uneventful man who took the stand. Martin Naumann, an 80-year-old man, appeared before a Berlin court. The man, whose face was hidden in front of a document file, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He will therefore probably end his life behind bars for a murder committed more than 50 years ago, when the city of Berlin was divided by the infamous “Wall of Shame”.

Indeed, Martin Naumann, aged 31 at the time of the events, was accused of having shot Czeslaw Kukuczka. The latter wanted to join the west in order to access a freer world, without the censorship and oppression of the communist GDR. To make matters worse, the Stasi initially made him believe that he had received authorization to go to West Berlin, but at the last moment Martin Naumann shot him, taking his life. Czeslaw Kukuczka is therefore one of the 140 people who died trying to leave the GDR, hoping for a better future.

If the trial could be held, it is thanks to the work of historians who have unearthed forgotten archives of the GDR. Matching clues made it possible to identify the shooter, Martin Naumann, who was decorated for the elimination of the Polish fugitive.

A “link in the chain of command” of the Stasi

The trial, in addition to having a historical dimension, is highly symbolic. It illustrates the desire of German society to face its history and the horrors committed during the Cold War period.. Martin Naumann tried to defend himself by claiming that he was only a simple performer
