As the era seems to cherish “negative comforters,” American studios are increasingly highlighting the enemies of superheroes. Illustration this fall with the Joker and the Penguin, Batman’s pet peeves now promoted by Warner.
« We give power back to you, the people. » In 2017, in his presidential inauguration speech, Donald Trump surprised everyone by repeating, word for word, this extract from the speech of Bane, Batman’s adversary in the film The Dark Knight Rises (2012). In the fall of 2024, less than a month before the American election, the enemies of the masked bat are back. Two weeks later, Warner Bros. released two fictions giving the leading role to outsiders vomiting the elite represented by the family of Bruce Wayne, the billionaire hidden under the Batman costume.
In the movie Joker: Folie à deux by Todd Philips (released October 2), Arthur Fleck (aka the Joker) is a professional assassin who embraces his schizophrenia to transform his trial, filmed on TV, into a happening. As the crowd chants his name, he challenges the authority of the city of Gotham (obviously a metaphor for America) by showing it that he is only the product of its corrupt institutions. Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s father, was killed at the end of the first film Jokerreleased in 2019 and Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
