: Nick Kyrgios back to win a Grand Slam

The fantastic Australian player Nick Kyrgios announced on Monday that he plans to return to the courts in Abu Dhabi in December, with the aim of winning a Grand Slam and “silence” those who doubt him.

The former world number 13 has played just one singles match on the ATP Tour in two years, after suffering knee, foot and wrist injuries.

The 29-year-old has repeatedly hinted he will retire, but told News Corp’s Code Sports show on Monday that he will return for the World Tennis League exhibition tournament in December before trying his luck at the Australian Open in January.

“I’m coming back because there’s something keeping me in the game,” said the man who gained a reputation for his outbursts of anger and his nervous breakdowns in the middle of a match at the start of his career. “I think I was pigeonholed as such because I was a little outside the circle of what a normal tennis player is,” he admitted.

“I’ve beaten pretty much everyone put in front of me, I’ve made it to the final of a Grand Slam, I’ve won a doubles title at a Grand Slam, I’ve won multiple titles and I’ve made money,” Kyrgios recalled. “But I think the only thing I’m aiming for now is a Grand Slam. I think it’s the only thing that will finally shut people up,” added the Canberra native. “This will be my deep motivation,” he promised.

Kyrgios, who worked as a commentator during his absence, reached his only Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 2022, losing in four sets to Serbian Novak Djokovic.
