An apartment located above the Le New Yorkais nightclub, in the city center of Angers, was ravaged by a fire early this Sunday, October 13. The condition of the damaged residence raises fears of a risk of collapse. Firefighters are still on site, and the intervention is expected to last most of the day.
Two people injured and around a hundred evacuated, such is the provisional toll from this fire. The fire started in an apartment located on the second floor of the residence, at 5, rue Maillé, before spreading to the roof. Partial collapse and water damage
The emergency services, alerted shortly after 3 a.m., mobilized 44 firefighters from the centers of Angers Centre, Chêne-Vert and the Academy, with the support of specialized teams from Saumur. They fought the flames using four lances, two of which were installed on the large ladder.
Although the fire was brought under control, the structure of the building was seriously weakened. The second floor floor collapsed onto the first floor, and a large water leak flooded the ground floor.
Injured and evacuations
The intervention required the complete evacuation of the building, including the Le New Yorkais nightclub located on the ground floor. Around a hundred people were evacuated. Among them, two individuals present in the apartment were transported to Angers University Hospital after inhaling smoke.
The operation, which is expected to continue throughout the day, has already prevented the fall of a chimney and two skylights. However, the reopening of the Le New Yorkais nightclub, also affected by the fire, is not planned for soon, indicates our colleagues from Courrier de l’Ouest
