2 hours and 35 seconds. This is the best time achieved last year by Kelvin Kiptum. A still unknown athlete, the 23-year-old Kenyan made a name for himself by smashing the world record of his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge (2h 01’09”), the king of the marathon, in this Chicago event.

New star of the race, who aimed for a marathon in less than two hours in April 2024 then gold at the Olympic Games, Kiptum died on February 11 after leaving the road in the locality of Kaptagat, in the Rift Valley , not far from his place of residence and training. His trainer, Rwandan Gervais Hakizimana, also on board, was also killed in the accident, shaking up the world of marathon runners and sport.

Tribute to Kiptum

This Sunday, October 13, the Chicago Marathon will mark the occasion by paying him a beautiful tribute. “The 2 hours and 35 seconds spent by Kelvin Kiptum in the streets of Chicago last October will go down in Chicago Marathon history. This year, as we see this void at the starting line, we want to honor his legacy.”write the organizers.

The big names at the meeting

Without him, the Ethiopian Birhanu Legese presents himself with the best mark (2h02’48” in Berlin in 2019), but has not enjoyed success since the Tokyo marathon in 2020. The Kenyans Amos Kipruto (winner in London in 2022), Vincent Ngetich (2nd in Berlin in 2023) and Daniel Ebenyo (who will make his first over the distance after a world silver medal in the 10,000m in 2023) complete the list of favorites.

On the women’s side, without the Dutch title holder Sifan Hassan, who is still taking it easy after her exploits at the Paris Games (three medals including marathon gold), the Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich, 2019 world champion and two-time winner at Chicago (2021 and 2022), is the fastest of the entries (2h14’18”). She will notably face her compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei (winner in London in 2021) and the Ethiopian Sutume Kebede, the fastest woman of the year (2h15’55” in Tokyo in March).
