This article will be continuously updated on Election Day

In 2018, Open VLD formed a coalition with N-VA for the second time in a row. Open VLD then obtained 42.5 percent of the votes, while N-VA accounted for 26.4 percent. Dirk Van Mechelen, who has been mayor for 24 years and is again a candidate for mayor, obtained 3,196 preferential votes in 2018 as the absolute leader.

After the defeat of the Liberals at national level in June, the question is whether the party can still convince its voters in Kapellen. In the previous municipal elections, Open VLD had a narrow majority with 15 seats, while N-VA managed to win 8 seats. Together, the two parties have formed a solid majority over the past twelve years.

Current councilor Luc Devriese is the N-VA list leader, while European Parliament member Johan Van Overtveldt is the list pusher. Valerie Van Peel, who obtained 2,524 preferential votes in 2018, has permanently left politics. The question is whether N-VA will succeed in getting those votes from other candidates.

Vooruit and Groen have decided to each go to the elections with their own list, after having formed a cartel together for the past twelve years. In 2012, that cartel won four seats, but six years later there were only three. CD&V is the smallest party in Kapellen with one seat. PVDA will not stand again this time.

We will supplement this article with analyzes and responses as soon as possible on election day, October 13, 2024.
