The Vice-President of the United States and Democratic presidential candidate on November 5, Kamala Harris, accused Donald Trump, on Saturday October 12, of lack of transparency regarding his health after having published his own medical report, thus highlighting their almost twenty years of age difference.

“It is clear to me that he and his team do not want the American people to really see what he is doing and know whether or not he is actually fit to serve as President of the United States.”said Kamala Harris. “He is unfit to exercise this mandate”she told journalists before her departure for the disputed state of North Carolina (southeast), recently devastated by Hurricane Helene.

A diagnosis that contrasts with the detailed medical report published Saturday by the White House, concluding that Mme Harris, 59 ans, a “the physical and mental resistance necessary to fulfill the duties of the presidency” of the United States and is located “in excellent health”. According to one of her campaign advisers, who requested anonymity, candidate Harris hopes, with this assessment which was not immediately published in full, to fuel a debate on the abilities of her Republican rival Donald Trump, aged 78 years.

According to the current vice-president’s doctor, her last medical examination carried out in April indicated nothing “out of the ordinary” and it benefits from a “excellent health”. The only notable treatment: allergen immunotherapy followed for three years to reduce the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

“The Endurance of President Trump”

Donald Trump’s campaign team was quick to react by assuring in a press release that the former president’s form had nothing to envy of that of Kamala Harris, quite the contrary. For Steven Cheung, communications director for Donald Trump’s campaign, the Democrat has a calendar “much lighter” than that of the republican, because he affirms, it does not possess “President Trump’s endurance”. The spokesperson claims that the Republican candidate has already voluntarily published several reports from doctors who “all conclude in perfect and excellent health” the Donald Trump.

Steven Cheung refers in particular to a letter from Donald Trump’s personal physician in which the results of physical examinations are mentioned in the standard and the results “exceptional” to cognitive tests. But these exams already date back to September 2023. And the Harris camp has redoubled its attacks.

“On August 20, Donald Trump declared that he would “gladly” publish his medical reports. He didn’t do it.”declared on X Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the Democrat’s campaign. “What is he hiding? »he asked, highlighting the ex-president’s refusal to debate Kamala Harris again after their televised battle in September.

A central question for Joe Biden

Questions about Joe Biden’s age, toughness and mental acuity dominated his campaign, until the 81-year-old president threw in the towel in July after a disastrous debate with the former Republican president . The issue has since rarely been discussed in the media and has had no notable influence on the polls, which are still close, despite the strong age difference between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and the ever more pronounced trend of the latter with disjointed digressions.

The vice-president would therefore like to bring the subject up to date, to her advantage. His campaign team carefully read recent articles from New York Times. One points out that the billionaire, already widely criticized by his adversaries for not having been transparent about his health when he was president, has not published a recent medical report. The other article in the American daily analyzes his recent speeches, concluding that they are always more « longs », ” confused “, “vulgar” et “obsessed with the past”.

The former president, with an undeniable physical presence, has a very sustained pace of travel and meetings. But he does not show fatigue comparable to that which often marked the gait, features and speech of Joe Biden. And according to polls, his age is not an important issue for voters.

A Gallup opinion poll published on October 10 shows that 41% of voters consider the Republican too old to be president. The percentage hasn’t changed much since Kamala Harris entered the race. According to Gallup, in June, 37% said the same thing, while two-thirds of Americans then believed that Joe Biden was too old to stay in the White House.
