Trade: direct sale of apples to retailers to lower prices

The Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion announced, Saturday in a press release, the launch of a direct sale operation for apples by producer farmers to retailers at the relevant wholesale markets, following the implementation place of free commercial spaces for the benefit of apple producers aiming to reduce prices and break the chain of intermediaries.

At the fruit and vegetable wholesale market of the “Magros” company in Attatba (Tipasa), the apple was offered at prices varying between 80 and 220 DA/KG, depending on the quality, specifies the ministry, adding that this operation saw the participation of producers from the wilayas of Blida, Médéa, Ain Defla, Tizi Ouzou, Batna and Sidi Bel Abbès.

This operation comes in execution of the conclusions of the joint meeting between the ministries of Commerce and Export Promotion and Agriculture and Rural Development, held last Thursday, during which measures were taken to curb the increase in price of this fruit, including the opening of free direct sales spaces for the benefit of farmers at the wholesale markets of the public company “Magros” as well as the provision of more than 144 points of sale to farmers, to market their products directly to consumers, including in supermarkets.

Furthermore, the Algerian company for the regulation of agricultural products “SARPA” and the company “Frigomedit” were responsible for acquiring the apple harvest from farmers to constitute a regulatory stock without profit margin, while guaranteeing the free transport of apples from farms to wholesale markets.

It was also decided to carry out a census of all cold rooms and apple storage spaces but also to determine the declared and undeclared stored quantities, in order to combat speculation and establish a timetable for progressive destocking. , depending on market needs.

The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune had ordered, during the last meeting of the Council of Ministers, to apply the most severe sanctions and to proceed with the immediate closure with withdrawal of commercial registers against speculators on local products, like apples, now sold at the same prices as imported fruits.
