This October 11, more than 150 people demonstrated in the streets of Pré-en-Pail, in the north of Mayenne. Everyone is demanding a new nursing home for their municipality. Due to its dilapidated state, the current retirement home, operational since 1960, will close.

Around thirty residents will have to leave their rooms for other nearby establishments. This is the case of Thérèse who has just arrived.

“We don’t know how it’s going to happen, how it’s going to end”confides the old lady, worried. “It was our choice to put Mom here, because there are 35 residents”underlines his daughter. “On French territory, there are only factory nursing homes, in quotes, which are privileged and in which we put money”she adds.

“Humanity for our elders”chant the demonstrators.

If the decision to transfer residents is confirmed, the definitive closure of the nursing home remains pending. A reconstruction and expansion project has been discussed for more than a decade. But funding is still pending. And unions fear history repeating itself.

“It was decided in 2016 that small structures with less than 80 beds were going to close, since supposedly it is not viable; it is not viable from the moment we do not give them the means to live , for sure!, protests Frédérique Nay, departmental secretary FO 53, who lists the closures of surrounding retirement homes, Sainte-Suzanne in 2016, Juvigné in 2021 and now Pré-en Pail.

However, the demonstrators assure, the mobilization will continue.

“Gentlemen and ladies of the ARS, if you hear us, if you see the noise we are making, know that we are not going to stop making it”reacts Anthony Gledel, staff representative.

While waiting for a possible new EHPAD, most of the residents will be welcomed at the Villaines-la-Juhel retirement home. Transfers will begin on October 18 and end in mid-November.
