The death of the former mayor of Aix, Jean-François Picheral

Jean-François Picheral, the former socialist mayor of Aix-en-Provence (during two terms from 1989 to 2001) died on Saturday October 12 at the age of 90. A radiologist by profession, he was elected mayor of Aix-en-Provence in 1989, re-elected in 1995, then elected senator of Bouches-du-Rhône in 1998. The mayor of Aix-en-Provence quickly reacted in morning upon hearing the news.

« I have just learned of the disappearance of the former mayor (…) Jean-François Picheral. I would like to salute his commitment to our City. Jean-François Picheral devoted a large part of his life to his city and its inhabitants, and this investment deserves to be saluted and recognized. Maryse Joissains, mother of Sophie Joissains, former mayor who succeeded Jean-François Picheral, also shared her reaction. “ Jean-François Picheral was a loyal political opponent for whom I had respect and a certain affection. He loved Aix en Provence and the people of Aix reciprocated him. I had friendship for his wife Suzanne with whom I spoke often.
