Nicolas Paolorsi: “There is this opportunity from Thierry Henry. There, you have the passion that takes over, and De Tavernost says ‘we are not selling'”

On RMC, Nicolas Paolorsi explained that the sale of the Girondins de by M6 to GACP could not have happened if Thierry Henry had said yes for the position of coach.

“In fact, when you speak with Nicolas de Tavernost, it’s quite funny because he has this side where he has become a real Girondins enthusiast in fact, over time. He is somewhat obliged to sell because the shareholders tell him that he must sell, because the Girondins are the only subsidiary of the M6 group which is in deficit… We must sell, and there is this opportunity which presents itself with a colossal amount. And then there is this opportunity from Thierry Henry. There, you have passion taking over, and De Tavernost says ‘we don’t sell’. And finally there is reason which takes over because Thierry Henry says no. Afterwards, if he had said yes, I’m not sure that the rest of the history of the Girondins de Bordeaux would not have been the same.

Journalist Vincent Romain adds.

“Thierry Henry had already signed up with Belgium to be assistant coach. If Nicolas de Tavernost was a little feverish that summer, it was also because he was starting to have signs, on the GACP side, that he was not necessarily the ideal owner. From Tavernost, one of his communication errors is that he always promised that if he sold the club, it would be to serious owners, to people who would help the Girondins progress. There had been several red flags over the preceding months that GACP may not be the ideal candidate. And so on top of that, there’s Thierry Henry arriving, so he says to himself that it’s now or never… The last time he signed a world champion, it was Laurent Blanc, and obviously that had worked really well, so history could be written again.”
