Soignies’ appeal against wind turbines at the Tellier des Prés quarry: “No to 180 meter wind turbines”

Reluctant to the project since the beginning of the summer, the town of Soignies said it was “unfavorable”, after the public inquiries carried out. She was waiting for guarantees and clarifications, particularly on the impact on local residents, before any definitive position was taken.

Two wind turbines at the Tellier des Prés quarry: planning permit validated by the Walloon region

For its part, the town of Braine-le-Comte was enthusiastic, considering these wind turbines as a good way to reduce the carbon footprint of its municipality. A dissension which today leads the Sonegiens to an appeal, because the answers to the concerns have not been provided by the Walloon region or the company.

Fabienne Winckel expressed surprise to us at the decision of the Walloon region, “despite the 1,159 complaints received during the public inquiry organized from May to June 2024 in the territory of the four municipalities concerned”, she specifies, mentioning the cautious opinions of Roeulx and Ecaussinnes, consulted on this subject. A snub to opponents of the current project, which the Municipal College intends to challenge by filing an appeal today.

A wind turbine twice as high as the Collegiate Church

“Beyond the numerous landscape impacts existing in the face of the height of these installations, equivalent to almost twice the height of the Saint-Vincent Collegiate Church, the City of Soignies is also concerned about the real consequences on rural housing. Asking on several occasions more in-depth studies, the latter wishes that the file be re-evaluated in the light of these more in-depth analyses”, reports the communications department of the City of Soignies.

François Desquesnes, Vice-minister president of local authorities, candidate for Soignies: “If I am elected mayor, I should declare myself unable to do so”

Wind projects are not absolutely unpopular in this city. Guarantees are required before considering supporting this project, as does “to give citizens the opportunity to invest personally in renewable energy. A request for which, currently, no follow-up has been granted.”

Nor has the preservation of the rural environment of this entity been planned. “The inhabitants of Naast will be affected by this project”the mayor told us, that the College is pleading today. “Minimizing impacts and maximizing results. All projects must take into account the rural character in order to avoid a loss of the value of the landscape wealth of the Cité des Carriers.”

The Tellier des Prés wind project far from unanimity in the Center region: the opinion of the Walloon region is imminent

To add that she wishes to understand and be involved, as she is in several issues related to sustainable development: “Furthermore, faced with the forecasts imposed by the Walloon Energy Climate Plan 2030, the City of Soignies underlines the importance of a detailed study regarding this type of establishment in the territory (optimization of locations, sufficient energy production to limit the number installations of this type in the territory…)” Appeal procedures which will be undertaken today, for an intricate intercommunal project which is taking shape in the long run.
