The six new winners of the second edition of the media competition for protected areas were awarded yesterday at the premises of the Antaninarenina City of Cultures.
This competition, initiated by the Foundation for Protected Areas and Biodiversity of Madagascar (FAPBM), a private Malagasy trust fund dedicated to the conservation of Madagascar’s biodiversity, was organized in partnership with the Varuna program, financed by the French development agency and implemented by Expertise France, the Varuna Sustainability Sciences project of the IRD and REMAPSEN Madagascar, the African media network for the promotion of health and the environment in Madagascar.
The six winning journalists each received an envelope of 3.5 million ariary along with training to carry out the reporting project that they submitted to the competition, which should revolve around the theme “ Young Conservation Heroes “. They were able to present their project and at the same time make a plea for young foresters and forest patrollers, or the communities in which they immersed themselves yesterday, before receiving their trophy. These immersive reports aim to bring to life the reality of the communities living in these protected areas, the pressures and threats weighing on biodiversity in the chosen protected areas and to raise awareness of the urgency of specific actions to preserve them. As a result, these young conservation heroes brave the incomprehension of their community and the climatic hazards sometimes at the risk of their lives, at the cost of great sacrifices, to ensure, with the few means they have, the protection of their forest. They need every support they can get. The reports will be broadcast subsequently on the media or broadcast channels of the candidates’ choice, with the aim also of drawing the attention of decision-makers to the impact of these young people on the conservation of our natural heritage which is obviously in danger. danger for different reasons.
