In Loire-Atlantique, a tragic event took place on Wednesday October 9 when a 70-year-old motorist was swept away by the waters in Pornic. This tragedy occurred while the department was under orange rain-flood alert, decreed by Météo France due to Storm Kirk.
According to information from Ouest-France, the gendarmerie indicated that the man ventured onto a flooded road and was trapped by a swollen river. The motorist was driving a car without a license.
A rapid intervention by a firefighter, who witnessed the scene, allowed the victim to be evacuated. However, his condition remains critical. The departmental fire and rescue operational center (Codis) declared: “Unconscious and hypothermic, he was urgently transported to the Saint-Nazaire hospital center.”
The weather situation in Loire-Atlantique caused flooding and violent gusts. On Wednesday, 35 French departments were under orange vigilance, while Seine-et-Marne even experienced red vigilance because of the floods. Local authorities continue to urge people to exercise caution.
