the dates to remember from the Harris-Trump duel

Ln November 5, Americans will go to the polls to elect their president and vice-president. Technically, they vote for a list of electors in each state, who then designate the tenant of the White House while respecting – most often – the popular will. The electoral college, which gives proportionally more weight to the least populated states, has favored Republicans for years.

Also on November 5, Americans will also elect 34 senators, out of the 100 in the Senate, and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. They are also subject, in around ten states – including Florida and New York – to a referendum on abortion. Voting by mail has already started in September in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. In total, more than two-thirds of states allow early mail voting.

November 5 (or later): the result of the vote

The name of the winner could be known from around 5 a.m. French time (i.e. November 6), after the closing of the last polling stations across the Atlantic. But if a large number of voters vote by mail, the counting could take longer. And in the event of a close vote, we will have to wait. This is what happened in 2020: Joe Biden’s victory was only announced by television channels four days later.

On January 2, 2021, Donald Trump begged and threatened the Secretary of State of Georgia by telephone to “find” him a little more than 12,000 votes and announce his victory rather than that of Joe Biden.

November 26: sentence in the Stormy Daniels trial

In this trial which has all the makings of a Hollywood film, Donald Trump was accused of having concealed the payment of $130,000 to ex-porn actress Stormy Daniels. This was to protect his image in view of the 2016 presidential election. In return, the ex-pornstar had to keep silent about the extramarital sexual relationship they allegedly had together.

On May 30, the jury unanimously found Donald Trump guilty of 34 counts. It was the first criminal conviction of a former tenant of the White House. It is now up to a judge to decide on the sentence, which will take place on November 26 at 10 a.m. local time.

ALSO READ Donald Trump in five key datesInitially, the date was to be July 11, but a delay was granted to Donald Trump at his request by the judge, to avoid suspicion of justice having wanted to influence the course of the election. Whatever the sentence imposed, a new election of Donald Trump would delay its implementation by four years – the duration of the mandate.

December 17: the electors vote

In each state, the electors will meet on December 17 and vote to elect the president and, on a separate ballot, the vice president. All ballots will be sent to the Federal Congress in Washington DC.

January 6, 2025: certification by Congress

The vote of the electors will be certified on January 6, 2025 by the elected representatives of the Federal Congress, under the authority of outgoing Vice-President Kamala Harris. It is this process that was interrupted by supporters of Donald Trump during the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Inauguration: January 20

This will be the start of Donald Trump or Kamala Harris taking office. The winner will be sworn in before a crowd on the steps of the Capitol in Washington DC for four years.
