Since 2017, the Mutuelle Sociale Agricole (MSA) has put in place a system to combat professional burnout in the agricultural sector. We went to meet Auvergne farmers who are taking part in a respite stay, far from their farms.

In Maurs, in Cantal, they chose to slow down, to take time for themselves, freed from daily constraints. Claire, a Charolais breeder, has a smile. However, like the other participants of this stay, she suffers from professional burnout. Claire Miharan says: “We are so busy with work, so stressed, we are always thinking about 30,000 things at once, that this rest allows us to breathe. It only brings happiness. This allows you to take a break from nature, a place where you live permanently. It’s a timeless stay. It’s like it’s 15 days of vacation. Like any entrepreneur, we always have problems”.

For 4 days, they will allow themselves to breathe, far from their farms. Rémi Amilhon, market gardener, explains: “We empty ourselves a little of the work context. It clears your head a little. Everyone has had a different life path and problems and this allows us to discuss, to see that we are not alone in having problems.s”. This stay, organized by the Mutuelle Sociale Agricole, is part of a prevention program against unhappiness. Patricia Billoux, social worker at the MSA, emphasizes: “They don’t open up much and they all have different backgrounds. The stay allows them to take a step back from their situation”.

Behind the appearance of a simple vacation, the stay, supervised by social workers, makes it possible to identify deeper vulnerabilities, including suicidal behavior. Patricia Billoux continues: “It also allows you to express what is wrong and to understand that taking time for yourself is not a waste of time. This is essential to get through stages that are sometimes difficult and to allow yourself to rest, to do nothing sometimes. It’s for their health and well-being.”.

In Auvergne, more than 4,000 farmers are supported by MSA social services. To cope, a helpline and an Internet platform are available 24 hours a day.
