Essonne rivers on alert as Storm Kirk approaches

Heavy rain is expected in Essonne this Wednesday October 9, 2024 due to Storm Kirk. The department, placed on orange alert for rain-flooding, will see heavy accumulations fall, up to 80 mm locally. The different unions managing the watercourse are in flood alert.

Several accidents in the department, flooded roads

« The peak of the phenomenon is expected at the end of the day, at peak traffic time”, announced the Essonne prefecture on social networks, calling on Essonniens to anticipate their travels “as far as possible”.

State services also report several accidents in progress on the roads of the department.

In Essonne, the N118 is flooded at Bièvres as is the RD 988 flooded near Forges-les-Bains. In view of the expected precipitation, a diversion is being put in place (RD 838 then RD132 in Angervilliers) specifies the departmental council.

“For your safety: limit your travelreduce your speed, increase safety distances from other vehicles,” advises the Essonne prefecture.

The equivalent of a month of rain in 24 hours expected around

According to Syage, the disturbance will be “very active”, until midnight and “the average accumulations expected on the Yerres are of the order of 55 mm, the equivalent of a month of rain in 24 hours”.

The union recommends “redouble your vigilance”. Downstream, the districts potentially affected by a flood could be those of Chemin des Prés, Segrain fountain in Quincy-sous-Sénart, rue Boiledieu in Varennes-Jarcy, Thibaudières district in Boussy-Saint-Antoine, island, Yerres confluence -New Year’s Eve, Chalandray plain in , Rue Suzanne district in Crosne.

“Overflows could also be observed on the ru d’Oly in the communes of Montgeron and Vigneux in the flood expansion zone along rue de l’érable pourpre,” the union further details.

Basins “ready to be used” around Orge

In the west of the department, the Yvette union (Siahvy) indicates that the rains this morning caused a rising river levels and the beginning of filling of the basins.

“Coupled with high soil saturation, runoff could be significant. Floods in the valley and network overflows have a significant probability of occurring in the territory,” assures the union.

“Rainfall this morning has caused river levels to rise, particularly on the Orge. Significant accumulations are announced this afternoon and evening, the watercourses should therefore rise throughout the territory”, details the Barley union, indicating that the basins “are empty and ready to be used”.

Finally, according to Siarce, the increased intensity of the rain expected at the end of the day “could lead to risks of urban runoff or on certain areas of plateaus which could find themselves temporarily flooded.”
