Jannik the resilient: “Very difficult match, happy with how I finished it”

The word “consistency” is perhaps reductive when compared to the 2024 results of Jannik Sinner, who in the 14 tournaments played so far has never failed – we repeat never – to reach the quarter-finals. Then in Shanghai there was also the desire to take revenge on Shelton, who twelve months ago, in what was their first challenge, “allowed himself” to beat him…

But it was anything but a simple victory: the world number one took almost 25 minutes to win his first point in response. “Very difficult match, he served very well. At the beginning he only fielded first balls: I tried to stay calm and wait for a few seconds to be needed – Jannik’s immediate comment -. But I want to focus on the positive side of the match, on how I finished it, hitting more aggressively and playing an excellent tie-break. This gives me confidence and gives me confidence ahead of the next match. It was tough, he had several chances in the second set but I managed to save myself and this helped me mentally.”

Fourteen quarterfinal finishes in 14 tournaments this year: “The goal? Well, I always try to finish in the best possible way. I’m happy with the level I managed to reach, despite everything that happened (the reference is to the question of positivity). What did I do here on rainy days? I went to the cinema and we went out for a bit, but I was very tired and I mainly tried to recover.”
