After the death of her daughter, the fight of a florist exposed to pesticides during her pregnancy

Aged 11, Emmy died in March 2022. The cause: her mother’s exposure to pesticides during her pregnancy. The parents, Laure and François Marivain, now wish to alert the general public and political leaders, as revealed by an investigation by Radio and Le Monde.

At just 4 years old, her daughter was diagnosed with B acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Laure then began to research on her own to try to understand Emmy’s illness. “I realized that on a bouquet, there could be 43 different pesticides. I understood that flowers were invisible killers“, she assures our colleagues.

The mother contacted the Phytovictimes association, which helps people suffering from pesticide-related illnesses. On their advice, she filed a file with the Pesticide Victims Compensation Fund (FIVP). Finally, in July 2023, his suspicions were confirmed when the FIVP commission recognized “unanimously the causal link between Emmy’s death and my job as a florist“.

I exploded with anger. I told the doctor: but it’s poisoning! You realize what we’re letting happen! And he replied: ‘I can’t tell you otherwise’“, continues Laure Marivain.

With her husband, they then decide to fight to denounce this “poisoning“. As Radio France and Le Monde point out, there is no legislation to protect florists. For good reason: there are no European regulations allowing maximum residue limits to be set.

The two parents appealed to the Court of Appeal to challenge the FIVP’s compensation proposal.limited to parents. This child suffered considerably, but there is a denial of her harm, because she died“.

The Phytovictimes association is calling for a rally this Wednesday, October 9 in front of the Renne court.
