Fire at La Chartreuse high school: how the school team is coping

After the fire which destroyed a floor and the roof of a building at the La Chartreuse school center in Brives, the educational team is mobilizing to give distance learning lessons. Around twenty rooms were destroyed in the fire. Apart from the high school students, the other students of the center will return to the school from Tuesday.

The Pôle La Chartreuse in Brives-Charensac suffered a fire on Saturday October 5 in the afternoon. “Thanks to the rapid and effective intervention of the firefighters, the fire was quickly brought under control. Fortunately, and this is obviously what we must remember, no victims were to be deplored,” underlines the pole in a press release press release transmitted this Monday.

Two high school buildings were hit. The school and college as well as the boarding school and school catering are unharmed.

A Monday at home for 2,200 students

By decision of the head of the establishment and the management team, the La Chartreuse site was, as a safety measure, closed for all students this Monday. A message was sent on Saturday evening to all families, students, teachers and staff to inform them of this decision so that they can anticipate the care of their children. Solidarity between the Pôle’s schools was immediately organized to welcome schoolchildren who could not be kept at home.

An ongoing investigation

Following the safety commission which took place on Monday morning, a meeting was organized for the teachers of the Center in order to take stock of the situation and anticipate the days to come. Captain Pascal Reymond, from the firefighters, intervened to explain the work carried out by the firefighters: an action which saved a lot of damage. In fact, “only” around twenty classrooms were destroyed by the flames. The investigation into the origin of this fire is still ongoing. From the beginning of the afternoon, a surge of solidarity blew through the Brivois site in order to preserve and reuse unaffected school equipment.

College students return on Tuesday

The conclusions of the safety commission made it possible to announce the resumption of classes for the 580 students of the college and La Chartreuse school on Tuesday, October 8. Information which was immediately communicated to the families concerned.

As the buildings dedicated to the high school cannot be used, the implementation of distance learning courses appeared essential in order to ensure continuity of education for students. Thus, from Tuesday morning and according to their usual schedule, the high school students will continue classes, at home, as warned on Saturday evening by the high school ENT.

Several solutions under study

The next step in the short term for the Pole’s management is to quickly advance the insurance files and consider future work as soon as possible. To welcome high school students again, numerous solutions are being examined: the development of the Center’s buildings, the installation of modular premises or even the use of partner premises.

“The rebound that the Center must make today, after this difficult ordeal, is all the more motivated by the countless messages of support from families, teachers, educational authorities, State services and local authorities as well as the entire local educational community, received on a daily basis.”
