Discovery of giant gas field confuses Colombia’s green ambitions

While Colombian President Gustavo Petro wants to reduce his country’s dependence on hydrocarbons, the exploitation of massive gas reserves disrupts his message.

Colombia is defending an ambitious financing plan for its energy transition. Authorities touted it last week as “ one of the most advanced » to the world to free itself from dependence on oil, gas and coal. “ We are moving from rhetoric to practice, creating an investment portfolio that aims to lead Colombia towards a low-carbon economy », Specified Minister of the Environment Susana Muhamad. At stake are megaprojects focused on nature-related tourism, low-carbon industries and adaptation to climate change through measures such as the electrification of transport. All for some 40 billion dollars (36 billion euros) which will be partly provided by foreign investors, the government hopes.
