Murder of Edouard Bernard Lajeune in 2020: Antish Ramkerun faces a formal trial before the Assize Court

Antish Ramkerun is accused of the murder of Edouard Bernard Lajeune, 46, which occurred in May 2020. The defendant had a relationship with the deceased’s niece. The trial will be held before the Assize Court in November 2024.

Antish Ramkerun, 21, faces a murder charge at the magistrates’ court. He fatally attacked Edouard Bernard Lajeune, aged 46, on May 19, 2020 in Rose-Hill. At the time of the events, the suspect was 17 years old and was in a relationship with the deceased’s niece, a relationship that Bernard Lajeune did not approve of.

On July 5, 2024, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) initiated a formal trial against Antish Ramkerun. The defendant appeared in court on October 2, 2024 and will be heard again on November 13, 2024, with a list of 46 witnesses to call.

In his statements to the police, Antish Ramkerun admitted the facts. He explained that on May 18, 2020, he went to visit his girlfriend. However, a heated argument broke out between him and his girlfriend’s uncle. Bernard Lajeune allegedly mishandled him before throwing him out. The next day, the uncle allegedly attacked the young man again at the girl’s home. A new argument broke out. This time, the forty-year-old insulted him. Antish Ramkerun explained that he then became angry and grabbed a sharp weapon.

In a moment of rage, he stabbed his uncle, but the blade broke. Despite this, Bernard Lajeune continued to insult him and even threatened him with a saber. A struggle ensued, during which Antish Ramkerun punched him several times. The uncle lost consciousness.

Shortly after, Antish Ramkerun realized that Bernard Lajeune was no longer breathing. In a moment of panic, he hid the body in the toilet of the house, hoping to dispose of the remains later. However, his girlfriend returned home and, discovering the scene, immediately alerted the police.

When the police arrived, the young man tried to escape by climbing onto the roof, but he was quickly apprehended. The autopsy revealed that Bernard Lajeune’s death was due to “aspiration of blood caused by facial injuries”.
