“For many Israelis, October 7 is just a long day that has not yet ended”

Israel marks this Monday the first anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack. A ceremony is organized in by the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions (Crif). Thousands of people are expected at the Dôme de “in tribute to the victims” et “in support of the hostages”.

Guest of France Inter, journalist Anne Sinclair talks about a “major shake-up”when she heard the news, on October 7, “an explosion at the savagery of this massacre and the atrocious sexual crimes”.

Dov Alfon, editorial director of the newspaper Libération assures us: “For many Israelis, October 7 is just a long day that has not yet ended”. “October 7 is still going on because there are the hostages”adds historian Vincent Lemire. “The first battle I led was the battle over the word terrorism. It is a terrorist act since it involves terrorizing civilians.”

A “liberation from anti-Semitism”

“On October 8, people started saying that the Jews were responsible for what was happening to them”said Anne Sinclair, denouncing a “liberation from anti-Semitism”. Anti-Semitic acts in France increased by 192% between the first half of 2024 and the first half of 2023, according to a note from the National Directorate of Territorial Intelligence (DNRT).

“The answer is education, it’s pedagogy”for Vincent Lemire. The historian confides that the podcast “Israel / Palestine, anatomy of a conflict” (created with Thomas Snégaroff) was widely listened to by young people: “I have a lot of messages from teenagers who tell me that they have learned and moved,” on the subject. “I think that the educational community did not take its responsibilities right away, I take my part in that. We are in the process of restoring things.”

This war is “experienced as a war of annihilation”

For the historian, this war is the worst crisis in the Middle East since the era of the Crusades: “There is a level of extreme violence, of hatred of others. It is ‘them or us’, a war experienced as a war of annihilation.” In this context: “How are we going to spend this day together?” asks Vincent Lemire. He calls to remember the deaths and hostages of October 7, Palestinian and Gaza civilians but also to “distinguish the vital interests of civil societies from the tactical calculations of their leaders”.
