The French only speak to their family 3 times a week but why? And you ?

Family communication is often seen as a barometer of relational health within a society. In a recent study conducted by Preply, a language learning platform, the frequency of family exchanges in was highlighted, revealing interesting trends and specific challenges.

Frequency of exchanges: A nuanced portrait

Preply’s study shows that the French communicate unevenly with their loved ones. Spouses and children are at the heart of daily exchanges, benefiting from the majority of interactions. Conversely, grandparents and grandchildren are often relegated to less frequent conversations, with fewer than two weekly exchanges on average. Surprisingly, a quarter of French people admit to never speaking to their grandparents.

Analysis of the main obstacles to family communication

The obstacles to regular family communication are multiple and reflect the complexities of a modern society. Here are the five main reasons identified:

  1. Geographic distance : Representing 23.6% of responses, distance is the main obstacle. Increased mobility for work or educational reasons keeps family members physically apart, making meetings less frequent.
  2. Lack of time due to other commitments : Cited by 19.5% of participants, this constraint highlights how professional, educational or social obligations limit the time available for family interactions.
  3. Busy work schedules : For 18% of respondents, long working hours, often exacerbated by commuting, hinder time spent with family.
  4. Past conflicts : Unresolved tensions are a barrier for 13.8% of participants. These conflicts, sometimes long-standing, can create a tense atmosphere and dissuade interactions during family gatherings.
  5. Different schedules : Differences in schedules, mentioned by 10.9% of respondents, complicate opportunities to meet up and communicate regularly.

Study methodologies and techniques

The Preply survey was carried out from August 12 to 21, 2024, questioning 1,503 people who have been residing in France for at least a year. Participants were asked about the frequency of their conversations with various family members, the communication methods used, and the obstacles encountered.

Societal implications of the results

This data is not just statistics; they reveal a profound change in family dynamics and social priorities. The evolution of family structures, accompanied by increased mobility and professional demands, seems to impose new standards in the way of maintaining family ties.
