After a flamboyant start to the season crowned with four successes in as many matches, CA Périgueux knew well that the two consecutive trips on its menu, Saturday October 5 to Massy and the following Saturday to Langon, would be serious tests.

National. A fall for CA Périgueux

Author of a 4/4 so far, the CAP arrived as leader in Essonne, did not resist the Massicoise rebellion on Saturday evening, conceding its first setback of the season (23-15)

Winners of their first trip, to Marcq-en-Barœul (26-32), the Périgourdins did not, this time, manage to bring back a single point from the region. If in terms of attitudes and desire, the Capistes did not give up, they did not have the usual performance in the kicking game and, above all, experienced too many ups and downs to avoid a first setback.

Losing to a team which was still in Pro D2 two years ago and which was hungry for points after a more than mixed start to the season, is not dishonorable, but returning empty-handed from Île-de- was still a disappointment: “We could have hoped for a little better, like this unsuccessful attempt at the end of the match which could have allowed us to get into the defensive bonus point. But overall, it was the team that wanted it the most and was the most disciplined that won,” conceded manager Didier Casadéi.

Ignition delay

In lesser proportions than last season, where they lost heavily (27-3), confirming their progress, the sky and white came up against Massicois intransigence, but above all paid for a chaotic start to the match .

“It’s a first reminder, which shows that we have to question ourselves every weekend”

A converted try and two penalties made the mission, already complicated, perilous (13-0, 18th). CAP then tied the game for a large part of the match and had the merit of hanging on with a penalty try (13-10, 29th). Except that when the tipping point seemed to be getting closer, the Ile-de-France residents went one better with a second try (20-10, 32nd).

Dominated in the phases of possession and conquest, Périgueux had great difficulty in endangering the Massic rearguard. There was a flash from Freddie Hickes as soon as he entered the game to rekindle the flame (23-15, 45th), but the CAP sorely lacked the efficiency to bring out the balls and to conclude the few advantageous situations.

So close, so far

Notwithstanding domination in the last half hour to try to grab a little something, the Capiste formation remained at the dock, despite an unsuccessful attempt (73rd) and final banderillas. There was room to do better for the former championship leader, but Massy did not leave much behind, showing himself to be realistic, pragmatic and solid.

So many ingredients that the Périgourdins have missed so much: “It’s a first reminder, which shows that we have to question ourselves every weekend. Not everything has to be thrown away, of course, but it’s regrettable not to bring anything back when an away performance, like this one, remains consistent,” underlined Didier Casadéi. Winners this weekend, Chambéry, and pass in front of the Capistes, who are no longer on the podium (but only one point behind) before going to play their derby in Langon, Saturday October 12 (4 p.m.).
