Iran: Oil Minister visits key energy site after Israeli threats

Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad visited a key oil site in the country on Sunday amid concerns about possible Israeli strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure, state media said.

Paknejad “arrived this morning [dimanche] on Kharg Island to tour oil industry facilities and meet employees,” the ministry’s organ, Shana, reported.

Located in the western Gulf, Kharg Island is home to Iran’s largest crude oil export terminal.

During his visit, the minister met with General Mohammad Hossein Bargahi, commander of the 4th Navy Region of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s armed wing.

“This meeting took place to verify the security of the South Pars platforms [complexe gazier et pétrolier situé dans la même région] and to report on the effective actions of the Guardian Navy in this regard,” announced the official Irna agency.

The minister’s trip comes as Israel, Tehran’s sworn enemy, said it was preparing a response to the missile attack launched Tuesday on its territory by Iran.

The Islamic Republic had indicated that its attack was a retaliation measure for the eliminations in Lebanon of the leader of the Lebanese Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, and of an important Iranian general, Abbas Nilforoushan, killed by a powerful – and very precise – Israeli air strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, in Dahiyeh, a known Hezbollah stronghold, on September 27.

US President Joe Biden on Friday advised Israel against attacking the oil sites of Iran, one of the ten largest oil producers.

The Iranian minister visited the port city of Assalouyeh on Saturday, an important petrochemical center in the country also on the Gulf, speaking of “a normal business trip” according to state television.

The direct Iranian attack carried out on Tuesday also aimed to avenge the death of the head of the political office of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, Ismaïl Haniyeh, eliminated on July 31 in Tehran in an attack blamed on Israel by Iran and the Palestinian terrorist group.

After the Israeli threats, the head of Iranian diplomacy Abbas Araghchi warned on Saturday that “for every action, there would be a proportional and similar reaction from Iran, and even stronger”.
