The Pas-de-Calais prefecture announced it in a press release reported by France Bleu: at least four migrants have died. Among the victims was a two year old child. The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, revealed that he “died trampled in a boat. Terrible drama which must make us all aware of the tragedy that is playing out.”

Overloaded boat
Our colleagues add that the boat was overloaded, and requested assistance from a towing vessel. It’s between 8 o’clock and 9 o’clock, this Saturday, October 5, that the rescue operation took place off the coast of Portel. 14 migrants who were on board this same boat were recovered by the ship. Another person was airlifted towards the Boulogne hospital.
“Fight against these mafias”
Still on the sidelines of his reaction to the tragedy, Bruno Retailleau deplored the role of “smugglers”, who have “the blood of these people on their hands and our government will intensify the fight against these mafias who enrich themselves by organizing these crossings of death“.
