With its large battery and its range of 600 km, the Ford Explorer buries the Tesla Model Y Propulsion and Long Autonomy Propulsion.
Has Tesla just made a serious mistake by raising the price of its entire Model Y catalog? Or did he simply have no choice? The fact remains that Ford has just struck a major blow by discounting its new Explorer electric SUV by an additional 1,000 euros. The same one which borrows the technical basis of the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 and which is produced in Belgium.
Thus discounted at 44,400 euros, the Ford Explorer sees its price start at 40,400 euros once the ecological bonus is integrated. That’s an advantage of 590 euros over the cheapest Tesla Model Y. And that’s where the big blow is. Because the Explorer is not compared to the Model Y Propulsion, but to the Long Autonomy Propulsion version (600 km of autonomy). For what ? Because its autonomy is promised for 544 kilometers thanks to its 79 kWh battery, compared to 455 km for the Tesla in the Propulsion version. There is no match.
Cheaper and more independent
If we therefore refer to the Tesla Model Y Large Autonomy Propulsion again sold for 42,990 euros after bonus (in October 2024), then the American is some 2,590 euros cheaper than its rival. Not a straw in a family’s budget. That’s what pays for a nice holiday for Christmas…
So of course, we can always oppose a power limited to 204 horsepower, but this is once again more than sufficient for daily use and to avoid wasting energy. And for an additional 1000 euros, you can always opt for the Range Extended version (77 kWh battery) with its 286 horsepower and 602 kilometers of range thanks to a new less demanding rear motor. This is still less expensive than the Tesla Model Y High Autonomy RWD. And as sales seem to be slow to take off at Ford, other even greater discounts can be found directly at dealerships, like this Range Extended example under 40,000 euros…
