Boom appears to be a well-known VRT face in ‘The masked singer’: “Sorry to the saleswoman to whom I lied….”

The fairy tale ends irrevocably for the fairytale figure Boom The masked singer. Neither presenter Jens Dendoncker nor the investigative panel could guess the mysterious BV. The Boom suit and the tip videos reminded both the audience and the panel of Tom Waes. But from Boom’s fairytale suit came a big hit, namely VRT news anchor Wim De Vilder.

For many it was a total surprise: Wim De Vilder, who never appears in game programs or panel shows, is the last name people thought of. The masked singer that they could still snare him.

“I was asked to join the program once in the first season,” he explains. “I decided against it at the time, but now I still wanted to participate, because it might be the last chance. I have now had a 25-year career as a news anchor, and I felt that I could now afford to show a completely different side of myself.” When asked whether we will see him appear in other television programs, De Vilder is clear: “No, not. You don’t know how many other shows I’ve been asked to do in the past. Stars on the dance floor, Dancing on iceyou name it. I always said thank you for that, but in the end I didn’t like singing. I used to sing in a choir and would still like to do so. But with my difficult schedule it is impossible for me to free up one fixed evening a week for choir rehearsals. And at The masked singer apparently they knew that I liked to sing.”

The suit Boom

But singing in a suit is of course something else. Last week we saw how Eikeltje almost fell off the stage during his performance. “The heavy suit of the Boom was also quite challenging. It put some pressure on my lungs and I couldn’t breathe very well. Seeing wasn’t always easy either. At rehearsal I also ended up facing the wrong way because I couldn’t see the stage properly.” (Continue reading under Boom’s performance)

White lie

“Lying is not in the nature of a news anchor, but I had to do it once,” he confesses Journal-anchor up. “I started looking for a brace because I have a tendency to turn my foot quite quickly. I went to the store and the saleswoman asked me why I needed it.” A question that made De Vilder completely panic. “I didn’t expect the question and then said something like: ‘I’m participating in a dance marathon.’ Now it just so happened that she was also a big dance fanatic and she asked me where it took place and how you could register. Then I heard myself say: ‘In the Netherlands, but it’s only a try-out, so you can’t register.’ Something I hate as a news anchor: lying. So here’s my apologies to the lady. I am happy that from now on I can simply tell the truth again.” (Read more below the photo)

Colleagues in the newsroom

No one knew about his participation, except two executives at VRT, De Vilder admits. “They fully supported me, just like the management at VTM, which was nice. Colleagues will fall from the sky, I’m sure. I kept it all a secret.” Although that was not evident for a long time. “Of course I never sang my songs in the editorial office, but isolated myself. Not singing them was difficult, because of course I had to practice properly.” De Vilder is therefore curious about the reaction of his colleagues. “I saw when Karl was unmasked (Vannieuwkerke, the Sporza anchor who was unmasked as Mister Withlove earlier this season, ed.) that many of them followed that on screen. I saw their jaws drop. Maybe now they will be even more surprised. But they can rest assured, I would very much like to return to The news.”
