French actor Michel Blanc dies at 72

Michel Blanc’s entourage confirmed his death on October 4 with a very sober message: “The actor Michel Blanc died in the night from Thursday to Friday in hospital at the age of 72.” BFMTV indicates that his death was due to a heart attack.

The actor from the Splendid troupe delighted and made people laugh in the 1970s, alongside Christian Clavier, Thierry Lhermitte, Josiane Balasko, Anémone, among others, and, of course, Gérard Jugnot. From the theater, they moved to the cinema together. Les Bronzés, by Patrice Leconte, marks an entire generation. His character of Jean-Claude Dusse, a magnificent loser, is remembered.

The actor quickly showed the extent of his talent and then shone in a solo career, also unforgettable for his roles in Come to my house, I live with a girlfriend (1981), My wife is called come back (1982) and even Papy makes resistance (1983).

Michel Blanc then moved away from comedy and turned to more dramatic roles. In 1986, he received the Best Actor Prize at the Film Festival for Evening Dress, by Bertrand Blier. He plays a man who discovers his homosexuality in the arms of a handsome young man, played by Gérard Depardieu. In 2012, he received the César for best supporting actor for L’Exercice de l’Etat, by Pierre Schoeller.

He also directs on screenplays he has written. To name a few, the cult Marche à l’ombre (more than 6 million spectators); Severe fatigue; Bad Pass (1999); Kiss whoever you want; and See How We Dance (2018).

With the disappearance of this popular actor and director, in the noble sense of the term, it is once again a part of the history of French cinema which is illuminated in a dark light.
