North Korea: Kim Jong Un will use atomic weapons “without hesitation” in the event of an attack on Seoul and Washington

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced this Wednesday, October 2, 2024 that his country would use atomic weapons “without hesitation” in the event of an attack by Seoul and its main ally, Washington. Pyongyang “will without hesitation use all offensive means at its disposal, including nuclear weapons” if “the enemy” attacks the country using “armed forces”, the leader stressed.

Washington, Seoul’s main partner

In response, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said his opponent would face the “end of his regime” if nuclear weapons were used, threatening a “resolute and crushing response.” Seoul does not possess atomic weapons, Yoon Suk Yeol is counting on the deterrent force of its American partner, who has stationed tens of thousands of soldiers on its territory. Kim Jong Un’s remarks come as South Korea just celebrated its Armed Forces Day on Tuesday.

Escalating tensions between the two Koreas

Currently, relations between the two Koreas are going through one of their most tense periods in recent years. Pyongyang announced in early August the deployment of 250 missile launchers on the border with its South Korean neighbor and published images of its uranium enrichment facilities in mid-September.
