The hunt is finally over. Thirty-one years after its launch, one of the oldest treasure hunts in the world, the Golden Owl, ended Thursday, October 3, announced one of the surviving co-organizers.

« We confirm that the Golden Owl countermark was unearthed last night, simultaneously with a solution being sent to the online verification system. There is therefore no point in moving to dig on the location you assume to be the cache. As previously announced, we are verifying the validity of the proposed solution” said Michel Becker on Discord.

The story of this unique treasure hunt

Created in 1993 by Régis Hauser and Michel Becker, this treasure hunt has fascinated generations of researchers for several decades. To further heighten the mystery, its main organizer, Régis Hauser, died in April 2009, 16 years night for night after burying it. He took charge of writing the riddles to find the coveted object.

The latter was created by the painter Michel Becker. With the death of Régis Hauser, he regained paternity of the owl after some legal disputes with his heirs. It reveals new clues in 2020 to restart the hunt which seemed to have stalled. According to Libération, there were nearly 200,000 hunters, also called “owlers”, who wanted to try their luck.

The Golden Owl

The lucky, still anonymous winner will win a prize worth 150,000 euros. The original statuette is made of gold, silver and diamonds. The one that was discovered was only a bronze copy.
