Without any surprise, “Joker: Folie à deux” takes the lead among the new releases on October 2 at the French box office. But with a score much lower than that of the first opus.

Things to remember
As in 2019, the Joker played by Joaquin Phoenix starts at the top of the box office. Unsurprisingly given the success of Todd Phillips’ film, which attracted a total of 5,610,306 spectators. Although it is still too early to know if Folie à deux will manage to do as well, the first figures suggest that it is not off to a very good start, even though this sequel attracted 131,948 people on the day of October 2 alone, which makes it the twelfth best start of 2024, in front of The Count of Monte Cristo and behind Blue & Company.
But it is 2.2 times less than the first part, released at the same time of year in 2019, and which attracted 291,152 spectators. With previews to which Folie à deux was not entitled. But even adding the 81,002 tickets torn up for these Joker screenings, he still remains behind, while the reinforcement of Lady Gaga could allow him to aim higher.
We now have to wait and see how word of mouth allows it to evolve. Because The Count of Monte Cristo is now approaching nine million spectators, while Blue & Company ended its run having delighted nearly 1.2 million people. As it stands, it would be surprising if Folie à deux did not reach a million. It remains to be seen how far he will go.
As it stands, Todd Phillips’ film is well ahead of the October 2 openings.
