The reform of initial teacher training, which was unable to be completed with the resignation of the Attal government, will be resumed to be effective in 2026, the new Minister of Education Anne Genetet announced this Thursday, October 3.

“The reform of initial teacher training, initiated by my predecessors, awaited as the needs are great, will be taken up again with my colleague Minister of Higher Education and Research [Patrick Hetzel, NDLR]the idea being to succeed for the 2026 session of the competitions »declared the minister during a speech to the rectors.

“This is an essential project for raising the level of students and the attractiveness of the teaching profession, which I particularly care about”she added, ensuring that the replacement of absences would continue to be “priority number one”.

Crisis of attractiveness of the profession

Bringing back the competition for school teachers to bac +3 instead of bac +5, it was to come into force at the next school year. It was presented by the President of the Republic in April, to respond to the recruitment crisis. The draft decree ratifying it was validated by the Council of State in July, but the text had not been published.

Teacher unions asked the government in June to suspend this reform. Universities, an association bringing together universities and grandes écoles, had also called for its « report »claiming not to be able to apply it “lack of arbitration”.

The crisis of attractiveness of the profession represents one of the “structural emergencies” for the unions. More than 3,000 positions were still unfilled in teacher competitions this year.
