Folie à deux” is not up to the standard of the first “Joker”

Joker: Folie à deux comes out this Wednesday, October 2 on screens. This 2h18 musical thriller is directed like the first opus by Todd Phillips, still with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. The newcomer is Lady Gaga. She plays Harley Quinn, the Joker’s love interest. Another notable arrival, Brendan Gleeson (Paddington, The Queens of India) who plays a prison guard.

History

Locked up in Arkham Asylum for his crimes committed in the first film, Arthur meets Harley at the local choir, a young woman obsessed with him – or rather by his Joker personality. With her, he dreams of being the hero of musical numbers, while his trial is taking place where he risks the death penalty…

We love…

Brendan Gleeson! It doesn’t seem like much, but his performance as a music-loving and brutal guard is simply astonishing. It’s a shame that the film doesn’t do much with this formidable supporting role, a type of character in which this immense Irish actor excels.

We like less…

The lack of vitality of this sequel. Folie à deux is a boring prison film, a boring trial film, a musical without energy… This intriguing mixture on paper does not provoke any excitement: one has the impression that the success of the first Joker (2019) was almost a misunderstanding, and that Folie à deux does everything to avoid republishing it. Joaquin Phoenix looks exhausted, and even Lady Gaga doesn’t sing that well, as if she had actually gotten into the skin of her character.
