Travel accidents still above 3,000

Last year, around 10 road accidents per day involved employees traveling to or returning from work in Luxembourg.

In terms of workplace accidents, 2023 will not have been a “good year”… And not only in business (with 14,273 work accidents) but also before or after taking up the position. What in Luxembourg is referred to as a “travel accident”. Thus, in the report just published by the Accident Insurance Association (AAA), the figure of 3.003 cas of “glitches” encountered on the road by employees between their home and their place of work is mentioned.

Certainly, we can be satisfied to see this number drop again (– 3% in one yearmore – 20% since 2018). This progress is all the more remarkable since from one year to the next, the number of employees among the 31,671 companies in the Grand Duchy and the national population have continued to increase. However, this is still a significant total. With consequences on the health of some, and the finances of others.

Because after the accident, someone has to pay the cash register to compensate for any damage or finance work stoppages linked to possible injuries. Thus, on average, the AAA had to pay 4.328 euros/accident reported (all types combined), i.e. nearly 226 million euros in various services.

Useful to know

Commuting accidents are not limited to the Home-Work journey. It can also occur between the employee’s place of employment and his or her work site. restorationin cellars or, more generally, the place where the insured person usually takes his meals.

Likewise, the notion does not only apply to car accidents, it can also be extended to a pedestrian, cyclist, train users et other mode of travel on the most direct route.

The workers in the section 46-50 ans are the most represented (13%) among the 2023 travel accident files. But overall all age categories have approximately the same risk rate of finding themselves involved in this type of problem.

And here, be careful, because payments from the Accident Insurance Association only benefit employees who are victims without being the cause of the accident. Just as there is nothing to hope for if the consequences of the travel accident are linked to a “gross negligence” of the insured employee himself (blood alcohol level for example).

Likewise, if the accident does not take place on a route usually followedthe insured person involved will have to prove that this “detour” was indeed “ dictated by the essential necessities of everyday life or in connection with its activity » (child to be picked up from daycare, visit to a parent to attend, join a construction site or a professional meeting outside the company for example).

If it is up to the employee to quickly notify their employer of the accident that has occurred, it is indeed theemployer who has an obligation to notify the AAA via a separate form.
