Food inflation rebounds: here are the products that have increased the most this year

Who says start of the month, says new basket “Testachats – Le Soir”. For three years, the consumer protection association has been measuring the price evolution of thousands of everyday items sold in the main Belgian supermarkets (Albert Heijn, Carrefour, Colruyt, Cora, Delhaize, Aldi and Lidl). Over the last twelve months, this immense shopping cart has seen its price increase by 2.76%. Inflation rebounded slightly over the last month, rising to 2.50% in August. Since January 2022, the total increase in the selected basket has increased by 27% on average. An increase which can be explained, among other things, by an increase in the price of raw materials and those of energy. Without forgetting the indexation of wages that the various intermediaries in the production chain have passed on to their costs.

Although inflation has now stabilized somewhat, it remains sustained for a series of products. Dark chocolate, olive oil and orange juice, for example, saw their prices increase by 28, 27 and 21% respectively. Conversely, wet baby wipes (-13%), fresh salmon (-11%) and cling film (-9%) are less expensive than a year ago.
