Szczesny at Barça, it’s official

Wojciech Szczesny joined Barcelona as a free agent on Wednesday to compensate for the serious knee injury of starting goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

FC Barcelona have offered a contract to Wojciech Szczesny, the Spanish club announced on Wednesday. The Polish goalkeeper reversed his decision to retire to help the team who lost Marc-André ter Stegen to a long-term injury.

German goalkeeper Ter Stegen underwent surgery to rupture the patellar tendon in his right knee last weekend and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Inaki Pena, 25, was initially expected to replace Ter Stegen, but Barca have strengthened their squad with Szczesny, who announced his retirement last month after terminating his contract with Juventus. The former Polish international, aged 34, still had one year of contract at Juve, where he replaced the great Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Szczesny won Serie A three times and the Italian Cup in more than 250 appearances for Juve, but lost his place to late-season signing Michele Di Gregorio.

Barcelona are top of the La Liga table with 21 points from eight matches and Hansi Flick’s side travel to Deportivo Alaves on Sunday.
