BFMTV SURVEY. 6 out of 10 French people do not want the Barnier government to be overthrown by the NFP motion of censure

The Prime Minister’s general policy declaration made this Tuesday, October 1 convinced some of the French, according to an Elabe poll for BFMTV published this Wednesday. A majority of respondents do not want government censorship.

Were the French convinced by the roadmap of the new Prime Minister Michel Barnier? He spoke to deputies this Tuesday, October 1. Convincing broad lines in the eyes of the French, according to a “Live Opinion” survey carried out by Elabe for BFMTV published this Wednesday. Purchasing power, ecology, security… The orientations of the new government are “widely approved within all population categories and electorates,” indicates the polling institute.

Barnier: a very corrosive style – 02/10

Only one category of voters disagrees: those of the New Popular Front, who are divided on controls at ’s borders (52% in favor, 47% opposed) and on the extension of the duration of detention for foreigners in an irregular situation (53%, 47%).NFP voters are also “majority opposed to calling on retired professors (61%) and retired doctors (56%)”, as this opinion survey highlights.

An unpopular motion of censure

Despite unpopularity on the left, the Barnier government seems to see the threat of a motion of censure recedesat least, in public opinion. One in two French people (54%) believe that the Prime Minister was right not to ask for a vote of confidence, a practice only part of the republican tradition.

62% of respondents do not want the New Popular Front’s motion of censure against the government to be adopted. “62% are of this opinion, including 31% not at all and 31% not really. Conversely, 37% want it to be adopted, including 21% rather and 16% completely,” quantifies Elabe.

According to our information, the left’s motion of censure should be tabled at the end of the week and then be debated by parliamentarians at the beginning of next week. This has little chance of succeeding, the National Rally and Ensemble pour la République having no intention of joining the NFP motion.

“In continuity” with Emmanuel Macron’s policy?

If respondents approve of the themes put forward in Michel Barnier’s general policy declaration, they give the government little credit for its “capacity to effectively improve the situation”.

Half of those surveyed believe that the government will be “effective” in improving the security of the French, 44% in carrying out a good immigration policy, 41% in improving the economic dynamism of the country, 40% that it will be effective in carrying out a good education policy.

The bar falls below 40% for access to public services (39%), improvement of the health system and public debt (36%). When it comes to social inequalities and ecological challenges, two-thirds of French people believe that the government will not act effectively.

Finally, for those surveyed, the policy enacted by the government does not represent a break with the previous seven years of Macronism. For 65% of respondents, Michel Barnier’s policy is “a continuation of that carried out by the previous governments of Emmanuel Macron”.

Sample of 1,007 people representative of residents of mainland France aged 18 and over. The representativeness of the sample was ensured according to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex, age and profession of the interviewee after stratification by region and category of agglomeration. Internet survey from October 1 to 2, 2024.
