‘Joker: folie à deux’: more crooner than rioter

What do you mean no Batman around? What do you mean, a grim, dark film that shares more DNA with Taxi driver in The king of comedy by Martin Scorsese than with the superhero genre? How do you mean you can raise more than a billion dollars, win film festivals and win Oscars? Joker was a phenomenal surprise. Follow-up Joker: madness for two is not phenomenal but surprisingly surprising.

The hangoverdirector Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have once again wanted to amaze by turning the sequel to their triumph into something radically different. A musical with Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel. Even though the end result is not a success across the board, it shows a lot of courage and artistic hunger.

After the murders from the first film, Arthur Fleck, the troubled, emaciated, abused human behind Joker, awaits trial in Arkham Asylum. The first half is a prison film, the second a courtroom drama and the whole thing is a musical. In Arkham, Arthur Fleck meets Harleen Quinzel during singing hour. Love seems to flare up. They sing and dance like crazy.
