The sounds of your day #2: Floorfillers ???? ????

One track for waking up, another for coffee, for running or drinking a beer with friends at the Canal Saint-Martin. For this third part of ‘sounds of your day’ we asked the Floorfillers, two DJs and producers from , to draw up their ideal 24 hours of sound. Meeting at the Yoyaku Records record store, on a balmy Saturday in September.

We saw them play this summer at the Decathlon Playground during the 2024 Olympics, sharing the decks with Emma B. Behind Floorfillersa stage name whose music fills the track, are Matteo Rio and Thomas Rigal. Two childhood friends who are fanatics of electronic music. « We originally listened to a lot of EDM in the back of the bus when we were in eighth grade. It was easy and more accessible at that time in our lives” explains Mattéo. Their first sounds range from Avicii to Martin Garrix, via Daft Punk.

Then the two friends dig into the underground side. “ Our influences took a turn when we started doing club nights,” continues Mattéo. “We watched a lot of Arte documentaries on Detroit techno and all the Resident Advisor reports.” adds Thomas, specifying that the maturity that comes with the years has played a major role in this musical opening. In search of emotion, of touch, but also of sound nuggets unearthed in the bins, they set their sights on vinyl to shape their artistic touch.

“We tried mixing on stick, but we realized we were much better with vinyl” confides Mattéo. “We also and above all like to take the time to go digging. Spending hours in the record store without looking at our watches” continues Thomas, emphasizing the ultimate goal: to get your hands on THE track that will unleash the dancers on the dancefloor. Sound identity level, the Floorfillers refuse the idea of placing themselves in a particular musical genre.

Even if they have a good range of techno, a lot of house, deep house, acid and touches of disco. “SIf we come across a Steve Poindexter or a vinyl produced on the Crydamoure label, it’s a guarantee of confidence,” specifies Mattéo.

After two hours of research in maximum concentration between the Yoyaku bins and a few whispers, here is Matteo and Thomas’ musical day.

THE SOUNDS OF YOUR DAY

Waking up with Soichi Terada – “Runners”

Matteo : « We are still in bed when the sound starts. I don’t know who puts the sound on the deck but we wake up gently, with a BPM that’s not too fast because we’re not much of a morning person. »

Thomas : « The shutters open, the light shines through without it being too abrupt. These little synth notes with a smooth and leisurely rhythm, it’s just the perfect ambiance for the morning. »

Prendre un café avec Moodymann – « I Can’t Kick This Feelin When It Hits (1996) »

Matteo : « When I listen to it, I really see myself drinking my coffee, sitting, waiting for the day to begin. My ideas become clearer with each sip and I let myself be carried away by the incredible voice of the singer who says “What am I gonna do?” “. It sets the tone: I really wonder what I’m going to do today! »

Drinking orange juice with DJ HONESTY – “Pleasure Breaks (Brawther Spankin’ Remix)”

Thomas : “For me this track is exactly the energy you will find in orange juice. The layers are fast, super broken, dynamic… A concentrate of vitamins to give you the impetus for the day! »

Lunch break with Frantz – “Hyde And Go Sleaze”

Thomas : « Ilet’s imagine, we teleworked all morning. We meet up to make food and sit down to chat over a good meal with friends. »

Matteo : « The atmosphere of the song is joyful and lively, we are happy to meet together to eat together. We know that the moment will be even more pleasant with this title. Especially when, right in the middle, there is a disco passage which is enjoyable. »

Aller courir avec Farley Jackmaster Funk – « The Acid Life (Swag’s WGCI Master Mix) »

Thomas : « It’s full acid! The kind of sounds that influence our music to death. For going running, it’s ideal. There you see, we arrive in Pantin after having covered five kilometers with slightly more violent kicks. Nickel for motivation! »

Drink a beer on the docks with friends with Old School Rider – “Dirty Rock”

Matteo : « I was working when I discovered this track, on Yoyaku’s Instagram account. Already, as soon as an Old School Rider comes out, I jump on it. That’s actually what I did when I finished my work day, going straight to their house to buy it.

Thomas : « The very essence of the song is conducive to celebration. We are on the quays of the Canal Saint-Martin with our friends, sunglasses facing the last rays, small beer in hand. What decompression! It could even lend itself to going on vacation with friends, in caravan mode on the roads. »

On the subway before a club set with Steve Poindexter – “H-20”

Matteo : “We are in line 4 to go to the club, with our two respective bags of vinyl. Like we share headphones, like we did before when we were in 4th grade on the bus to go to college (laughs). »

Thomas : « It’s raw, not at all smooth, the acid leaves a borderline enigmatic aspect. The climb at the beginning lends itself too well to the rushing arrival of the metro. The slightly underground side, the strange noises we hear in the train… Even the gray colors of the metro remind me of the sound of metal or iron! »

The peak time perfect for a set: Giuseppe Scarano – ‘Acid Banger [DISCO 008]’

Matteo : « The kind of piece that is too stylish and essential. On the other hand, you never know in advance when you are going to launch it. Most often, we place these hyper tonic acid tunes right in the middle, because it corresponds to the dynamic that we want to bring up at that moment. We know that the set will take a turn with this! ”

Clôture de set : Floorfillers – « True Price »

Thomas : « We played this one at the end of the set at Badaboum for the release party of our EP at four in the morning. People loved it so much they whistled the whole time! This crazy energy warmed our hearts. This feeling of pride, without pretension, of seeing people enjoying our own music, it was incredible! »

Return the set: Schatrax – « Mispent Years »

Matteo : « I’ve been looking for this cake for five years! This is clearly the moment when we have packed up all our things, the lights have come back on and we are on our way home at seven, eight o’clock… or even nine or ten o’clock. »

Thomas : « It’s the kind of sound that relieves the stress and pressure of the performance you’ve just given. An emotion emerges from the synth-bass, which plays a fairly soothing layer. »

District 10the new EP of Floorfillers released on September 6, 2024, composed of four finely constructed tracks, is to be released (urgently) on Soundcloud. And for the diggers from the very beginning, who prefer the chopper on vinyl, it’s on sale at Yoyaku and available to order on Bandcamp.
